The society was formed in 1998, by a small group of local fairground enthusiasts, to promote awareness of the annual Stamford Mid Lent fun fair. This ancient event being the largest street fair in Lincolnshire, and one of the major events of its kind in the country. The narrow streets of this market town, together with part of the town meadows, are filled with all the latest travelling rides for one week in March. Visitors from near and far visit the fair to experience the carnival atmosphere, created by the showmen’s attractions. At the same time to also admire the 12th century architecture of the surrounding buildings.
